Instagram reached an expressive mark in the month of June: figures released by the company indicate that the social network now has 1 billion monthly users. The figures were announced along with another new feature in the service: Instagram IGTV.
The new tool is accompanied by a series of changes in the social network, which today can be considered one of the most popular in the world. In this article, we’ll show you all the details regarding the Instagram news that moved the month of June and show why you should invest to reach an audience that continues to grow.
Significant growth: 1 billion users
In September 2017, Instagram announced that it had reached the milestone of 800 million active users per month. Nine months later, the growth was 25% and now the social network has reached 1 billion active users per month. It is the biggest growth among the main social platforms in the market.
In the first quarter of 2018, Snapchat, Instagram’s main competitor, grew 2.13% in daily users, reaching an average of 191 million. Facebook has increased its monthly user numbers by 3.14%, reaching an impressive 2.196 billion people. Instagram’s growth is the highest of all in percentage: 5% per quarter.
According to eMarketer, Instagram is expected to generate $5.48 billion in US advertising revenue in 2018. That figure represents a 70% increase over last year. Not bad for a service that now accounts for 28.2% of Facebook’s mobile revenue.
IGTV: the new bet to compete with YouTube
The main feature of Instagram is now available in Android and iOS versions. This is IGTV, a video hub that allows content creators to post videos up to an hour long. In other words, it is an initiative that transforms profiles into channels, aiming to compete directly with YouTube.
Until then, the duration limit for videos posted on the platform was only one minute. “We’re envisioning mobile video with a new self-contained surface that offers longer videos and ease of discovery through channels, all in a vertical format that sits vertically in the palm of your hand,” explained Instagram developers in an official note. released to the press.
To find the new thing, just find a new button at the top of the app. The most popular videos will be highlighted on the IGTV home page. Users will be able to subscribe to these new channels and activate alerts to be notified when new content is posted. IGTV consecrates the vertical format, similar to Stories.
At least for the time being, there won’t be any advertising on IGTV either. However, this momentary decision is a double-edged sword: if on the one hand it is beneficial to users, who can watch their content without interruption, on the other hand it discourages content creators, since there is still no perspective when it will be possible to monetize the posts. Anyone who wants to consume only IGTV content can also do that. The company announced an IGTV-specific app for Android and iOS.
“We believe this is the future of video. People continue to spend more time on entertainment on their mobile devices, and we’re making it easier for them to get closer to creators and the original content they love,” said Instagram. By 2021, it is estimated that videos for mobile devices will account for 78% of total mobile traffic.
Video Calls on Instagram
Finally, closing the list of news, another tool that should quickly gain a lot of attention is video calling. From now on, this feature will be available to all users via direct messages.
The idea is similar to what already happens on Facebook and WhatsApp, two applications that belong to the same company. The good news here is that you can continue browsing the social network while chatting, as video chat can be minimized in a pop-up window.
And one more bonus: the app is also getting a set of virtual reality filters. The idea is that everyone can use virtual objects that interact with their posts in Stories. Be sure to also check out the new look of the “Explore” tab. It is now possible to find content by themes such as “Travel”, “Animals”, “Sports” or “Food”.
