Selling fashion on Instagram is nothing new. A number of retailers already look to the platform as a strong sales channel due to the millions of regular consumers who spend hours of the day there. Given this, you need to understand how to leverage Instagram to leverage your Fashion Ecommerce sales once and for all.
Why sell on Instagram?
Selling on Instagram can be a sea of opportunities. Nowadays, it is one of the most famous and used applications in Brazil, having a huge user base.
Currently, Brazil is the second country with the most users on Instagram, losing only to the United States.
And in terms of sales, the results are fantastic. According to a survey by CloudShop, almost 70% of sales made by social networks came from Instagram in the last quarter of 2018.
Also, Instagram is basically a visual app. So, to post photos of your products and get the attention of customers, it works perfectly.
In other words, there is no lack of opportunity.
But you can also take advantage of other social media giants to sell.
Brazil is the third country with the highest number of Facebook users, for example, with a base of 130 million users.
For those just starting out, it’s recommended to focus on one or two chains to be able to sell, but I’ll go into more detail on that later…
What to sell on Instagram?
Now that you know the importance of Instagram, you might be wondering what it can sell there. I brought some ideas here to inspire you:
Do you know all the clothes that are taking up space in your closet that you don’t wear? Have you ever thought about earning money on it?
- Or, who knows, you already produce your own clothes, but you haven’t taken the first step to start selling yet.
- It is also possible to resell products. Get in touch with a clothing supplier …
Anyway, no matter how you wanted to do it, the truth is that you start selling fashion through Instagram – and other social networks I’m going to talk about here – may be the best way for anyone looking to start from scratch.
I say this because it is recommended that you start with a small structure, but even so, you need to have the right strategy to make good sales.
But you can’t make sales through social media without a good strategy to stand out and reach customers. As easy as it is to use Instagram and Facebook, for example, you need to pay attention to what you’re doing, otherwise you might end up scaring off potential customers..
That’s why, in this article, I decided to show you how to sell fashion on social media.
This step by step I created myself with all the experience I acquired in 10 years selling Fashion over the internet and with my brand, Pormenor.
Here is a video where I give some good tips on the subject:
Without further ado, let’s get to the tips. They are essential for you to sell fashion on Instagram and other social media in the right way.
How to Sell Fashion on Instagram
1 – Focus on one or two social networks
I mentioned earlier that these tips would cover more than just Instagram. But it’s important that, in the beginning, you focus your energy on just one or two social networks.
If you choose to focus on two, understand that one of them will be the main one, the one that will give you the most return and the one you will be most dedicated to.
You can work with Instagram , Facebook , Youtube … but when you work with fashion, I recommend Instagram, because it’s a more visual social network. It’s the social network best known for selling clothes. As such, it can be extremely useful and practical for someone who is starting to sell.
On Instagram, you can use Hashtags to give your posts more visibility. In addition, you can abuse good content on subjects that connect with the audience, which, little by little, will help you gain followers
2 – Create a professional account
Most people have a personal profile on Instagram, but it won’t be enough for when you sell there. On Instagram, there is the option to make a business account. Do this and sell your clothes on this account.
Even if your sales channel is on a social network, you need to be as professional as possible at all times.
Professionalism generates credibility and loyalty in your customers. They will feel more confident about buying from you.
In addition, the business account will provide you with data and metrics that you don’t otherwise have access to. It will be much easier to make strategic decisions for your business based on these metrics.
Many people believe that selling from a personal account generates more reach, but that’s not true.
There are several free strategies you can use to gain followers, get good service, produce content …
All this in a professional way, giving more reliability to your consumer.
Not to mention that, in the future, you can start working with paid traffic, which can give your business more momentum.

3 – Think about your customer’s behavior
One of the best ways to sell is to put yourself in your customer’s shoes. So, think: how does he behave on social networks?
If putting yourself in his shoes is very simple, just think about what you would do. After all, you’re not just a seller, you buy too.
With that in mind, think about how you behave on social media.
When you go to Instagram, you probably don’t want to go there to buy something. People use social media to see friends, share moments…
Nobody wants to be impacted by offers all the time, right?
Social networks serve to create relationships, so you can get closer to your customer.
I will explain the importance of this using the concept of sales funnel.
What is a sales funnel
The sales funnel is the customer’s buying journey in your company. There are basically 3 stages of this journey.
The top of your funnel is where you will attract people to your business who don’t know you yet.
The middle of the funnel is where you will generate engagement with these people. He already knows your brand, now it’s just a matter of maintaining a relationship with him and keeping him around.
The background is where you will convert these people.
On Instagram, there is the Insatgram Shopping tool, where you can, when posting your products, put the price with the link on the page that will direct you to the payment method.
Your social network will do the top of the funnel job. That’s where you’ll share content, deliver value to that customer, and reach new people for your company.
To attract these people, you will create relevant content for that customer on a recurring and consistent basis. Be there to be seen always.
I’ve put together an article to help you get ideas for what to post. Check it out: 8 Posts That Bomb on Social Networks
Post valuable content, don’t just post product all the time. Remember social networking behavior, no one wants to see offers all the time.
You can use Hashtags, partner with digital influencers, invest in paid traffic…
That way, when you’ve reached a good number of people interacting on your page, you’ll take them to the middle of your funnel, engaging them.
4 – Keep on relating to your customer
Never discard your client.
Once the customer has made the purchase, you must maintain that relationship. Therefore, make an effort to get the phone contact of this customer, so that you can reach him also through Whatsapp.
You can also contact him via Direct and Email, but Whatsapp is more personal.
So, take the opportunity to send gifts, ask if everything went well with the purchase. If it disappears, send a message to see if everything is ok, a coupon…
In other words, stay close.
5 – Seek knowledge about the Business
The world changes all the time, as do the consumer and the market. So it’s no use being stuck on one platform and thinking that it will be your eternal source of income.
If you lived in the days of ICQ, Orkut, Fotolog, etc., you know that social media can be very popular one day and the next day, it’s not anymore. News arrives all the time.
That’s why you need to have a solid foundation for your business, so that you can sell anywhere and anytime.
And if you don’t seek knowledge about the subject, you will end up being left behind.
I have separated an article that I wrote myself where I reveal the essential strategy for a Successful Fashion Ecommerce. This is a 4-step strategy with the pillars that support the business.
The steps are these:
- Structure (Physical and Online)
- Relationship (Service and Sales)
From them, I also show you how you can grow and boost your business in other channels and platforms, selling in a constant and sustainable way.
To give you an idea, these steps are the same as in my Zero Fashion Ecommerce training, but I’ll show you here for free.
