How do you change your name on Instagram? I think we’ve all tried to change our name at least once. But most social networking sites limit the number of changes you make to your name. There are even some networks that do not allow you to change your username at all. Instagram, however, is upside down. You can change your name, but also your username, whenever you want, without paying.
The display name and username are two completely different things. The name displayed is the one found on your profile, below the profile picture. It does not have to be unique and may contain special characters and emojis. And it can be changed whenever you need.
The username, on the other hand, appears at the top of the profile and at the end of the URL. It must be unique. It also has several restrictions. Among them we find:
- up to 30 characters
- can only be composed of letters, numbers, periods and underlines.
It follows that we cannot use emoji or other special characters, because they make the URL inaccessible.
There are various reasons why you might want to change your name. Maybe you want to update your account with a professional name, maybe you changed your real name or you just want to change something in your account. Whatever your reason, it usually takes less than a minute to change your name. Here’s how.

If it’s more convenient for you, you can also change this data with the desktop version of Instagram. Here are the steps to follow:
- Open a browser and enter instagram.com
- If you are already logged in, you will be immediately redirected to your account. If not, then you will need to enter your login details
- Click on your profile picture to the right of the home page
- Select ” Edit Profile ”
- Here’s how to change your name.
If you enter something wrong in this name change process or if you don’t like the new name, you have two weeks to decide if you want the old name back. After this period, you will still be able to return to the previous name. Only if no one else has taken it in the meantime.
What do I do if the name I want is already taken?
As I mentioned earlier, you can’t have the same username as someone else. This is because each URL in each account must be unique. The principle is a basic one – first come, first served. If the username you typed is taken by someone else, Instagram will tell you after you confirm and not before.
If the username you want isn’t valid, try using unique numbers or underscores.
Also check back from time to time. The name you want may become valid in the future. The current owner can change or delete their profile. Instagram also has a habit of deleting fake profiles, so you have a chance for the username you want to become valid.
